Prevent Class Cancellations

Registered in a class and not sure if it's going to run due to low enrollment? Give us a call to see how many registrations are needed and then go to work!  Talk it up to friends; co-workers; relatives; other members of a group you belong to. You can make a difference and avoid your own disappointment and others' when a class you really wanted to take gets cancelled.

If you and a group of your friends have an interest in a class you've seen in our brochure with a timeframe that doesn't work out, let us know of your interest and we will let you know if it is possible to create a new class and explain what it will take to do it.

Remember:

  • A minimum number of participants is required for all classes
  • The decision to cancel a class must be made at least 2 business days before it starts (unless noted otherwise). If the minimum number hasn't been met - we have no choice but to cancel.

Also, don't wait to the last minute to sign up - we want to know you are coming!

Thanks!

Tim Dresser Receives The Gerald LeVasseur Award from Maine Adult Education Association

Five Town CSD Adult and Community Education announces that director Tim Dresser was presented with the prestigious Gerald LeVasseur Award at the annual Maine Adult Education Association Conference held at Colby College in June 2014.

The Gerald LeVasseur Award is given to one outstanding Adult Ed director each year in recognition of his or her outstanding and unusual work in the field of Adult and Community Education.  Dresser began as an adult education director in Rockland where he initiated a successful partnership with Literacy Volunteers to open a learning center there in the 1990’s.  After he became Director in Camden/Rockport, he established the daytime Adult Learning Center in Camden and recently engaged the West Bay Rotarians assistance in the re-opening of the Hospitality House, thereby creating educational, advising and tutoring resources for the homeless of Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties.  In addition to his duties as director, Tim is President for West Bay Rotary for 2014-2015.  He serves on the board of the community agency MCH, Inc., which helps seniors, people with disabilities and low-income individuals maintain independence with dignity, and he has delivered Meals-on-Wheels in Camden for the past 8 years.  He also supports United Midcoast Charities, Make A Wish of Maine, and Dempsey Center for Cancer, Hope and Healing.  He has served on the board of the Maine Adult Education Association including as president, and is a relentless advocate for the support of adult education in Maine, both in Augusta and in the local community.

Five Town CSD’s Adult Education office is located at Camden Hills Regional High School, 25 Keelson Dr., Rockport.  Contact them at adult.education@fivetowns.net or 236-7800, ext 5.

Heidi Nolan Wins Outstanding Adult Education Teacher Award

Heidi NolanFive Town CSD Adult and Community Education announces teacher Heidi Nolan has won a Maine Adult Education Association Outstanding Teacher of the Year award at the annual Maine Adult Education Association Conference held at Colby College in June.

Heidi has been tutoring at Five Town CSD’s Adult Learning Center for 9 years.  She is the teacher for Literacy tutoring, HiSET (formerly GED) preparation, College Transitions tutoring and advising, and for ESOL tutoring.  Last year she designed and taught the “Math Boot Camp” programs, which she teaches at URock (University College at Rockland) to serve students in need of math help.  In addition, this year Heidi started tutoring and advising people at the homeless shelter in Rockport, which serves the homeless in Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties. Heidi’s programs are all open enrollment, meaning people can join and attend when they are able to, with the exception of Math Boot Camp.

The Maine Adult Education Association chooses just two outstanding teachers for this award from the many nominees who have all been teaching over five years, plus one teacher who has been teaching less than five years.

Five Town CSD Adult and Community Education is based at Camden Hills Regional High School, 25 Keelson Dr., Rockport.  The Adult Learning Center is located at 7 Lions Ln. in Camden, in the Superintendent’s office building near the middle school. Thank You For Another Successful Year!

It has been another successful year in our Adult Education program!  Thank you for making our adult education program one of the most successful in the State of Maine! Well over 2,000 people take part in it each year. Keep in mind that we are constantly looking for new ideas and new teachers and are continually striving to make this a diverse and inviting program. We need your help to make this a truly “community” education program.  Let us know what you would like to see us offer, or what you could teach or any other ideas you think would help make this a program that serves this community better.  Thanks to all who have participated over this past year!

Tim Dresser, Director
